Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

The movie from February 4, 2012:

SATURDAY'S MOVIE: "IT CONQUERED THE WORLD " (1956) Starriing Peter Graves, Beverly Garland and Lee Van Cleef. Strange beings contact an earthman who helps betray the human race for hopes of power. His wife, played by Beverly Garland, doesn't go for it and takes a shotfgun after the aliens! Terrific low-budget fun!. Suggested by Roger Malafa.

Well I sat down with Bob Pellegrino on this past Saturday night to watch IT CONQUERED THE WORLD (1956). A Roger Corman, slam-bang quickie from the late fifties. It seems hurried, has goofy effects (rubber bat things) and monster (forever known as the carrot-cucumber monster) and nutty dialogue. But it movie like lightning and neber gets boring (perhaps the speed of the production help it in this way). The actors are all excellent and handle some of the ridiculous dialogue with zeal and fun. Peter Graves is perfectly, gravely serious, Beverly Garland is one steamed woman, scorned from attention by aliens, and her obsessed husband Lee Van Cleef steals the show as the pawn of the creatures from Venus. Plus, for comedy relief we have Jonathan Harris (as a Mexican) and straight man Dick Miller, both playing army guys. Unplug any sense of reality and just have fun with this one...it is a blast!

Favorite scene: Beverly blasting away at the aliens in the cave with a rifle.

"It Conquered the World" is one of Roger Corman's silliest films. The plot, which has pieces taken from other sci-fi films including
"The Day the Earth Stood Still", doesn't make a great deal of sense. The three leads, Beverly Garland, Lee Van Cleef and Peter Graves, do a great job of reciting  their lines with conviction. They must have had a difficult time keeping a straight face! There is more talk than action.

Everyone is either driving up and down the hills or have drinks at Van Cleef's house.
Jonathan Haze's performance as a Mexican soldier, complete with darkened skin is way over the top.
The creature actually looks like a halloween mask with arms. The arms just wobble loosely back and forth when it moves. When the creature comes out of the cave, you can actually see a tear in the costume's seam!

Still there are a few good scenes. Beverly Garland's encounter with the creature in the cave is the highlight of the film.
"It conquered the World" is still a fun film to see if you don't watch it on a regular basis.
